HOK Designs Boston Consulting Group’s Canadian Headquarters

Long before the pandemic, Boston Consulting Group had embraced hybrid work, giving employees the freedom to come to the office—which total more than 100 across the globe—meet with clients at their workplaces, or complete certain tasks from home. Whichever made the most sense for the business at hand. That said, collaboration is at the heart of how the management consultancy, often referred to as BCG, operates: Staffers form teams to tackle knotty problems clients are facing and puzzle through the issues to arrive at solutions. And this sort of teamwork, BCG felt, is best carried out face-to-face.

Back in 2017, when the company tapped HOK for its new Canadian headquarters on three floors—46, 47, and 48—of a tower rising in Toronto’s financial district, BCG sought an office that would be dazzling enough to draw employees to the workplace, that would provide a variety of bespoke settings so that teams could be as productive as possible while on-site. All of which is to say that when the pandemic hit in 2020—sending companies around the world scrambling to, first, figure out how to work remotely during lockdowns and, then, how to lure employees back to the office after they’d become accustomed to doing their jobs from home—BCG was way ahead of the game. Sure, there were tweaks to HOK’s concept for the 100,000- square-foot BCG project because of the pandemic—designers had to make sure work- stations were 6 feet apart, for example, and they loaded up meeting rooms with video- conferencing and audiovisual equipment for staffers participating remotely—but the changes amounted to fine-tuning a good plan that was already in place. And the result is this spectacular, ultra-sophisticated space that serves as a showplace for the company and a magnet for a workforce now numbering more than 400. “On the busiest days, we’re approaching pre-pandemic attendance levels,” Nina Abdelmessih, BCG’s chief of operations and external relations in Canada, says. “Everybody is coming in.”

HOK Designs a Hybrid Office for Boston Consulting Group

the two-story atrium of Boston Consulting Group's Toronto headquarters
Beyond the custom steel sconces attached to columns, city and Lake Ontario views fill the two-story atrium of Boston Consulting Group’s three-level Canadian headquarters in Toronto by HOK.

The plan’s success started with carving out an atrium near the window wall on the two lower floors—one advantage of coming to the project while the building was under construction was that this could be done before the floor plates were in place. Working with the developer, HOK specified an opening measuring a generous 20 by 80 feet, envisioning it as the “heart of the organization,” Caitlin Turner, HOK director of interiors in Canada and the project lead, notes. The atrium fills with light and opens up views of the city and Lake Ontario. Rooms situated off it are sided in glass so everyone shares in the sunshine.

A beckoning staircase steps up through the atrium to the top floor. It encourages employees to walk up and down—healthier for them than taking the elevators—and results in serendipitous encounters that add to the general esprit de corps. “There’s this buzz,” Turner enthuses. As for the seating areas in the base of the atrium, in the café, she adds: “At lunchtime, it’s like a high-school cafeteria.”

Flanking the atrium are two unusual work areas: raised glass-enclosed meeting rooms reached by small flights of stairs. These little getaways for groups are just one example of the variety of bookable spaces found on all three floors of the HQ. “There’s a saying around HOK,” Turner continues. “One size misfits all.” Thus, she and her team gave BCG gathering options that would suit just about anyone’s personal work style—or the missions they might have. “If reaching consensus is the goal, there are rooms with round tables,” Turner explains. “If it’s sharing information, there’s stadium seating.” Even within some rooms, there’s a mix of seating: Employees can go from sprawling on lounge chairs for brainstorming sessions to sitting at a desk to tap away at a laptop.

The materials palette helps tie it all together. HOK selected leathers, linens, wools, stone, and wood— most sourced in Canada—to give the office more of a luxe hospitality feel than a no-nonsense corporate one. The firm, after all, not only ranks fifth amid our 100 Giants but also 81st on the Giants Hospitality list (as well as 10th and 45th for Healthcare and Sustainability Giants, respectively). Hand-troweled plaster adds texture to a wall near reception on the top floor. Fine oak millwork appoints the library. Touches of brass gleam throughout, from pendant fixtures over banquettes in the café to the vertical panels on a timeline of BCG’s history, also near reception. HOK also commissioned Canadian artists for paintings and artisans for tables with wood or marble tops.

CN Tower views are seen from a nook furnished with Kateryna Sokolova’s Capsule chair and Patricia Urquiola’s Burin table.

But serendipity also played a part: Turner tracked down a black-stained oak credenza she spotted on Instagram for use in a touch- down room, where it joins an oversize pendant fixture by Marcel Wanders and sinuous Italian armchairs. It’s just a sampling of the international, contemporary aesthetic permeating this buzzing workplace—one that is clearly not cookie-cutter but has helped become something of a model for other BCG offices in the throes of relocation and renovation.

HOK Chairman and CEO Bill Hellmuth Dies at 69

Bill Hellmuth, chairman and CEO of HOK (formerly Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum), died recently at the age of 69. As an architect and natural leader, Hellmuth helped build HOK into an innovative, global firm.

During his leadership, HOK earned widespread accolades including being named one of the world’s most influential companies by Time Magazine as well as taking home Interior Design Best of Year Awards (in 2021, the firm won for creative office). The firm also ranks fifth on Interior Design‘s 2023 Top 100 Giants list. But Hellmuth viewed his work—and projects—as opportunities to connect with people on a more intimate level. Known for walking through the office and offering desk critiques, always welcoming fresh ideas from anyone who happened to overhear or pass by, many recall Hellmuth’s mentorship.

“They never expected him to be so hands-on. But that is something Bill took great pride in,” said Susan Klumpp Williams, managing principal of the HOK D.C. office. “He was happiest when working with one of our designers at their desk. His passion for design and our profession inspired those of us who had the privilege of working closely with him.”

Hellmuth’s ability to create strong personal connections also enabled him to better understand how to approach the buildings he designed. “How do you do the very best work of your time and create a situation where you’re contributing to the culture of the society that we live in?” Hellmuth says in a video clip produced by HOK, which offers insights into his creative process. The answer is evident in his work. The recipient of 29 awards from the American Institute of Architects, his innovative projects spanned 20 countries. From the 75-story Abu Dhabi National Oil Company Headquarters in the UAE to buildings in and around Washington, D.C., where he spent much of his life, such as NOAA’s National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Maryland and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Hospital Renovation in Bethesda, Maryland, Hellmuth’s legacy lives on his work.

The Life and Career of Bill Hellmuth

Though Hellmuth considered D.C. his adopted home, he began his career in New York after earning a master’s degree in architecture at Princeton University and a bachelor’s in architecture from University of Virginia. There he spent 14 years working on office projects before joining HOK in the St. Louis office in 1991 with encouragement from Gyo Obata, who cofounded the firm with George Kassabaum and George Hellmuth, also known as Bill’s uncle. Hellmuth connected with HOK’s founding principles, which centered around geographic and project diversity, at the time he accepted the job.

Shortly thereafter, Hellmuth relocated to the firm’s Washington, D.C., studio. Under the mentorship of Obata, Hellmuth began to formalize his design principles and visions—and bring them to life. He believed architects had an obligation to design projects with minimal impact to the environment, for example. Under his tenure, HOK designed hundreds of green-certified projects—over 400 designers achieved ‘green’ certification.

When tapped to become CEO in 2016, Hellmuth accepted the role on the condition that he could remain the design principal for HOK’s Washington, D.C., studio and firm-wide design leader. A year later, he also was named chairman. In his leadership roles at the firm, Hellmuth spearheaded the opening of new offices in Denver, Miami and Austin, helped diversify HOK’s leadership board, increased pro-bono design and charitable giving, and led the creation of HOK Diversity x Design Scholarship for underrepresented design students.

“With the perspective of more than four decades, I can safely state that I have never met an architect who was Bill’s equal in combining design thinking, empathetic leadership, client relations, business development and business acumen,” says HOK president Carl Galioto who first met Hellmuth as a colleague at SOM in the late 1970s. “He truly was one of a kind and it was my great pleasure to work with him.”

For Hellmuth, designing spaces around the world for people to live, work, and connect in offered him an endless source of joy and inspiration. “I’ve got the best job in the world,” he says in the video clip. He also enjoyed painting and vacationing with his family at a cottage he designed in Rhode Island.

Hellmuth is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughter Grayson and her husband, Cleve Rueckert, his son William, and his two grandchildren.

HOK Creates a Streamlined Office for a Freight Rail Operator in Atlanta

Transportation company Norfolk Southern Corporation traces its history back to 1827. But today it’s firmly rooted in the 21st century. Its subsidiary, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, which oversees 19,000 miles of train tracks across 22 states, relies on technology to ensure safety, move goods efficiently, and reduce fuel emissions. But to be innovative and nimble—and attract top coders and engineers—NS needed to consolidate into a state-of-the-art headquarters. For decades, the corporation was based in Norfolk, Virginia, but its operations and technology teams were in Atlanta. In 2018, NS decided to bring everyone together, and HOK won the bid for the interiors of a new 750,000-square-foot complex in Midtown Atlanta’s Tech Square.

“The client didn’t want this to be treated like a train museum,” HOK firm-wide director of interiors Tom Polucci begins. “The existing buildings had beautiful models of locomotives, but NS said, ‘No, we’re more sophisticated than that.’” Betsy Nurse, HOK Atlanta’s director of interiors, adds: “Norfolk Southern sees itself as a tech company, not a railroad company.” The client envisioned a timeless concept where track workers and administrators alike would feel at home, with ample flex spaces to help the 3,000 on-site employees meet and collaborate. Robust amenities—fitness center, food hall, game room, childcare center—would help the company compete for talent against the likes of Google.

A three-story staircase of Corian-clad steel and white oak forms the centerpiece of the Norfolk Southern Corporation headquarters in Atlanta, with interiors by HOK.

With architecture by Pickard Chilton, the ground-up headquarters is composed of two office towers (10 and 17 stories tall) joined by a five-story podium, which houses the lobby, amenities, and parking. HOK was at the table from the beginning and helped shape some of the architectural solutions, especially in the podium. The parking deck constrained the volume that would become the lobby, which could have been one to three stories high. “We studied different options and how the floors wove together,” Polucci says. The team landed on a 32-foot-high lobby that’s open to loungelike collaboration zones on the second floor and creates energy and buzz. This gave HOK the opportunity to create a monumental circular stair, the defining element of the interior.

The firm conceived of the stair as an iconic sculpture that would make the headquarters unique. Its ribbon of Corian-clad steel twists from the ground floor to the fourth, but the white-oak treads only begin on level two. In the lobby—detached from the stairs for security reasons—the Corian curls to wrap the reception desk. “Our goal was a pure form,” Polucci says. “The ribbon is consistent all the way up; it doesn’t flatten out at each floor.”

The stair begins on the second level, which is populated by various flex and gallerylike spaces united by white oak flooring.
The stair begins on the second level, which is populated by various flex and gallerylike spaces united by white oak flooring.

The stair grew out of the idea of movement, the guiding theme of the project. “Norfolk Southern was looking to celebrate the idea of motion in subtle, special ways,” Polucci notes. Outside the building’s entrance, a site-specific sculpture evokes tunnels and curved tracks in weathering steel. Nurse points out that the artwork is right outside the lobby, where you can see its relationship to the stair: “One is super refined, the other is raw.”

Artwork populates the interior, as well. In the ground-floor café, which is open to the public, there’s a 19-foot-high mural by HOK’s Experience Design team of a train on a track under a golden moon. Nearby, a painting by local artist María Korol hangs at the end of the main elevator lobby.

Standing on the plaza outside the building, a new structure by Pickard Chilton that consists of a pair of 10- and 17-story towers joined by a five-story podium, the sculpture is visible from the honed sandstone and natural quarried stone–floored lobby, simultaneously echoing and juxtaposing the Corian stair.

On the fourth floor, the stair terminates in front of the network operations center, which is like an air-traffic control room for trains. “From a visitor experience, it tells a story, because you land at the heart of the facility,” Nurse says. The room vividly channels the concept of motion with angular pendant fixtures and 2,000 feet of recessed LED strips that streak across the ceiling and down the walls. The center, which operates 24/7, also glows with blue lighting chosen to be soft on the eyes of dispatchers staring at screens all day.

Employees come together in the fifth-floor canteen that doubles as an all-hands meeting space. Designed like a food hall with six different vendors, it sits between two outdoor terraces; one has a retractable glass wall so the spaces can flow together. Totaling 55,000 square feet, the outdoor areas include another terrace by the gym on the floor below, where employees can do laps on circular walking paths. “Movement is also important to Norfolk Southern from a health and wellness perspective,” Nurse states. Glass-walled stairs in both towers further encourage physical activity.

While the array of amenities might seem like a post-pandemic bid to lure workers back to the office, the program had already been in place. The headquarters was mid-construction in March 2020, and Norfolk Southern stuck to the plan—even keeping a permanent desk for each employee. “That was a key tenant from the beginning,” Annie Adams, Norfolk Southern’s chief transformation officer, says. “It was important that everyone have a space to call their own.” The company, which had a phased move-in that began last fall and was completed in April, had always planned on accommodating hybrid work; meeting rooms are wired to connect remote participants seamlessly. Adams estimates that the headquarters is typically at 80 percent capacity. For her, the project’s success goes well beyond its anticipation of flexible work schedules. “The design reflects who we are and where we’re going,” she says. The future of freight rail, it seems, is right on track.

HOK Cofounder Gyo Obata Dies at 99

Renowned architect and cofounder of HOK, Gyo Obata, died March 8 at the age of 99. Obata played an instrumental role in building HOK from a regional St. Louis-based practice that opened its doors in 1955 into a global design firm alongside fellow principals, George Hellmuth and George Kassabaum.

“Gyo’s extraordinary career at HOK continued into his 90s, and he served as a mentor to several generations of designers including myself,” shares HOK chairman and CEO Bill Hellmuth in a tribute published by the firm. “As an example to all of us, he led HOK to become the largest architecture-engineering firm in the United States while never abdicating his role as a designer of significant projects.”

Gyo Obata stars at the camera.
Gyo Obata.

Throughout his six-decade-long career, Obata demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community development, prioritizing the needs of those who lived in and around the spaces he brought to life. Foregoing trends and external pressures, Obata listened intently to each client, translating their ideas into extraordinary structures via a holistic approach that, ultimately, drove HOK’s expansion into new speciality practices, market sectors, and regions overseas.

Born in San Francisco in 1923 to Japanese parents who were both artists, creativity never lacked in his childhood home. But he also faced extreme challenges. Shortly after enrolling in an architectural program at the University of California, Berkeley, Obata’s education was interrupted by the Pearl Harbor attack and the internment of thousands of people of Japanese ancestry that followed, forcing him to continue his training at Washington University—one of the few in the U.S. to accept Japanese-American students. There, Obata earned his bachelors degree and went on to continue his education at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, studying under Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen. After working in the field for a few years, he founded HOK with Hellmuth and Kassabaum, earning the title of principal at age 32. And HOK is where he stayed, even coming into the office into his 90s.
