Peruse A Minimalist Boutique Redefining Clean Design In Louyang, China

No signage necessary. That could easily be the slogan for White Is Good Shop, a tidy, all alabaster–hued boutique in Louyang, China, that sells high-end cleaning products in minimalist packaging as well as fashion and tabletop items. To underscore its concept, Beijing-based DesignReserve capped the structure with a white-as-snow pitched roof that’s an abstraction of the traditional eaves of the surrounding centuries-old buildings, formed from twin-wall polycarbonate sheets and translucent waterproof fabric. By day, it diffuses sunlight inside; by night, it glows like a lantern. The roof is joined by raw concrete columns in a slightly darker ecru and a logo aglow in frosty neon. “White is not one color,” DesignReserve founder and design director Song Fengzhou states.

That notion is exemplified in the 540-square-foot interior, where Fengzhou and her team crafted a spectrum of subtle tones and textures for such elements as the epoxy-painted floor and modular aluminum-framed display system. “The environment is dominated by white from top to bottom,” cofounder and codesign director Yue Feng adds, “but it’s not monotonous.”

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls dissolve the boundary between store and street, while an extended eave shelters a platform that doubles as a gathering space. Though it was conceived as a pop-up—and, notably, developed on a pop-up budget—White Is Good Shop has proven so popular that the community has elected to keep it in place permanently, creating a dialogue between traditional and contemporary, embodying a shift that’s happening across China today.

Seattle Aquarium’s New Addition Speaks To Environmental Stewardship

2024 Best of Year Winner for Environmental Impact

Organic design inspired by ecology defines LMN Architects’s 50,000-square-foot Ocean Pavilion addition for Seattle Aquarium, an institution committed to ocean conservation. Expansive glazing—including an iconic oculus—bathes interior spaces in natural light, illuminating marine exhibits like the 500,000-gallon reef housing 120 species. Green materials, from carpet made of recycled fishing nets to recycled-paper Richlite paneling, reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship, while every detail, from the dichroic acrylic accents and exposed mechanicals to working with Indigenous consultants, speaks to transparency, inclusion, and interconnectedness. Behind the scenes, sustainable practices include all-electric operation systems and optimizing seawater usage.

Just Right: 5 Homes Tailored To A Tee

Whether centuries old or new, houses big and small, stateside and abroad, have been tailored to meet their site and occupant needs.

Step Inside Geographically Distinct Homes From New York To Portugal

Brooklyn, New York, Home by Bo Lee Architects

Natural light, room to grow, and a connection to and respect for the environment were top priorities for the gut renovation of a young couple’s four-story Cobble Hill town house. Natural materials abound, particularly in the cherrywood-paneled solarium-dining area, which extends into the reimagined garden, pulling sunshine into the adjoining kitchen with white-oak cabinetry. The top floor, above the main suite’s spa-like tiled bathroom, contains child and guest bedrooms, the latter with artwork by local painter Sara Woster easy to convert for more offspring when the time comes.

Palm Springs, California, Ranch by Studio Todd Raymond

Desert modernism meets midcentury Brazil in a three-bedroom, three-bath ranch designed in 1964 by architect Charles Du Bois. What began as a decoration commission morphed into a full renovation for the client, a boomer couple that uses the residence as a weekend retreat in the offseason. Retaining the original concrete breeze-block, the house was returned to its studs, then outfitted with old and new furniture and art pieces, including the dining area’s custom table by James De Wulf, Thierry Jeannot chandelier, vintage Brazilian chairs, and Malcolm Hill mural, and a vivid Oswaldo Vigas painting above the den’s cozy Avery Boardman sofa.

Warsaw, Poland, Cottage by Noke Architects

For a creative couple seeking proximity to nature but also urban buzz, a microscopic garden plot near the city center provided the perfect opportunity, albeit with serious limitations, namely that a permanent structure could not exceed 35 square meters. Deliberately hidden behind greenery, the spirited tidy cottage is indeed amid the elements. Tile encircles the bathroom, which, despite looking open-air, is glass roofed. Cobalt switches to rose red in the combined living/ kitchen/sleeping area, where plywood paneling is stained with natural oil.

San Francisco Home by Studio Vara

With a winding stair and stark-white, contemporary envelope, it may be hard to believe this seven-bedroom home plus carriage house were built in 1894 in the Queen Anne style—a revitalization, in collaboration with Cello & Maudru Construction, proving that preservation rather than teardown can result in something entirely fresh and modern, one that minimizes energy and material waste. Now, original moldings join orb-shape kitchen counters in crisp Corian, monolithic terrazzo bathroom vanities, and a gallery-esque dining room with wide oak floor planks and a sculptural Lindsey Adelman chandelier.

Costa Oeste, Portugal, Summer Home by Pura Cal

The renovation of a seaside summer home retains its original midcentury flair while integrating such local materials as marmorite terrazzo for flooring and cobogó, a ceramic screen typically used on facades but here partitioning the kitchen. Guests are greeted with nautical stripes in their sleeping quarters, while, in the living room, the family mascot not only gets to lounge on a 1970’s Portuguese sofa reupholstered in côtelé velvet near a vintage bamboo lamp shaded in new Pierre Frey fabric but also has a custom commissioned portrait of herself.

Arnau Reyna Unveils A Stool With Sustainable Flair

Spanish studio Arnau Reyna debuted a stool at this year’s Hábitat València fair that, in a thrillingly concise move, has just two components: an upholstered cylindrical ottoman and a tubular-steel armature that sidles below to provide even footing and extends ramrod-straight to terminate in a half-moon backrest…which itself doubles as a carrying handle. Tibo comes in three sizes and is available just as the ottoman and with optional casters. (The collection also encompasses three side tables made from the same powder-coated steel tubing.) The design neatly reflects cofounders Ramón Arnau and Mariola Reyna’s ethos of versatility and functionality and is sustainably made, too, at Mobboli’s workshops in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid. ¡Viva España!

Design Reads: Indulge In Chic Italian Interiors

Italian Interiors: Rooms with a View
By Laura May Todd
New York and London: Phaidon, $70
272 pages, 250 color illustrations

In a seminal 1928 essay, Gio Ponti described the model Italian home as something much more than a refuge from the elements. It must go beyond the functional, he said, as a house is not only shelter but “a repository for life: a place where objects delight and provide comfort.” The domiciles collected in this new volume exemplify that theory, showcasing examples that serve as a canvas onto which the individuality of their residents is painted.

The 50 projects are assembled into a novel table of contents, each itemized not by name or designer but with a description. And, rather than proceeding chronologically, chapters are arranged into a montage of styles and time periods. For example, Il Palazzetto, a Monselice farmhouse renovated by Carlo Scarpa and his son Tobia between 1978 and 2006, is listed as “a 16th-century home reworked by a pair of renowned architects;” it now has a room appointed with a Le Corbusier LC4 chaise lounge.

a pink poster with the words,'tailorrs'

Current designers are here as well. Mirta Ottaviani’s Puglian vacation retreat mixes limewashed white with vibrant accents and has ample outdoor access. In contrast on the very next page, a Tuscan home by Baciocchi Associati is earthier, its walls made of cocciopesto, a concrete dating to ancient Rome.

As for Ponti, his work appears in the form of Casa di Fantasia, a Milan apartment he originally completed in 1953 for an art-collecting couple that’s considered, as the name implies, one of his boldest commissions. It was recently reinterpreted by David/Nicolas studio founders Nicolas Moussallem and David Raffoul, who not only preserved the surrealist style but also added it to with such elements as French oak boiserie inlaid with tiger stripes—exactly the sort of joy-sparking detail il signori Ponti spoke of when imagining the perfect Italian interior.

These Baseball-Inspired Ottomans Are A Home Run

Here’s a curveball: Many high-end products take care to hide their stitching. But these beanbag perches from the Gandia Blasco brand, flaunt it, in a nod to the red threading of baseball seams. The outdoor pieces, by Madrid-based Italian architect Teresa Sapey, were exhibited at Hábitat València. They expand upon Diabla’s Costuras collection ottomans, Base and Ball, with models built for two, cutely inspired by Sapey’s twins. Essentially doubled versions of the original shapes, XL Twin Base and XL Twin Ball each span 4 1⁄2 feet. Their foam forms, topped with polystyrene beads for extra squish, are wrapped in waterproof upholstery that unzips for removal. Some 32 fabrics are available, from the geometric Comedia del Arte to solid colors like plain white or blush pink with contrast stitching.

Indulge The Art Of Dining At These Global Eateries

In eateries from Switzerland to Canada, designers craft atmospheres that are visual feasts cleverly linked to the cuisines.

Discover Visual Feasts, From Switzerland to Canada

CAAA by Pietro Catalano by External Reference

For this 16-seat, fine-dining establishment, next door and with direct access to an art gallery, a snowy, Nordic setting was achieved by bringing an AI-generated image to life via a ceiling of 63 individual modules 3-D printed from plant-based cellulose. Natural materials carry over to the custom tables and chairs in stainless steel and ash, their and the overall venue’s monochromatic palette referencing the alpine forests surrounding the city of Lucerne, Switzerland.

Carlo’s by JJ Acuna/Bespoke Studio

Inspired by New York City’s Italian-American red-sauce joints, old-world touches at the neighborhood spot include an oak bar, brass-framed mirrors, hand-plastered walls, and a pizza oven imported from Italy. Contemporary, international moments come in the form of vibrant paintings by such artists as Brian Calvin and Nicasio Fernandez, tartan textiles, and Japanese paper lanterns—all a testament to the city of Manila’s multiculturalism.

Gloria Café by Zikzak Architects

Part of a downtown business center in Kyiv, Ukraine, has been transformed into an urban oasis that embodies the best parts of coworking spaces and public parks. Ample custom seating in diverse zones range from a coffee bar to long communal tables to a cozy nook with a woven wall panel, while the combination of milk oak, beech, and alder with the green-painted exposed ceiling and biophilia throughout create the feeling of a forest path.

Milpa by Bold Workshop Architecture and _SA Sturgess Architecture

Vivid colors and rounded archways define the Spanish colonial architecture of chef Elia Herrera’s native Veracruz—and they do the same at her restaurant in Calgary, Canada, serving authentic Mexican cuisine (milpa is Spanish for cornfield). The rhythmic arcs were CNC-cut from MDF, coated with bright semigloss turquoise paint, and embedded with LEDs, creating a wave effect that delineates zones, including the seating areas near the long, central bar faced in quarry tile.

Mass Studies Looks To The Void For London’s Latest Serpentine Pavilion

For two decadesLondon’s Serpentine Pavilion, the summer installation commissioned annually to a different architect, has drawn throngs of attendees—some 1 million in recent years. So it was particularly unusual that when Minsuk Cho visited in 2005, when Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura had designed it, he found himself totally alone with the structure, reflecting on the nature of that particular public space. “It offered a spectrum of experiences,” the architect recalls thinking, “from quiet introspection to exhilarating collective moments.”

That was two years after Cho had founded his firm, Mass Studies, in his hometown of Seoul, South Korea. And it’s now that his Archipelagic Void is the Serpentine Pavilion 2024, providing its own range of experiences via a starlike structure with a 26-foot-diameter empty space at its center. Radiating off it are five semi-enclosed structures, or “islands,” in locally sourced Douglas fir, each a different shape and hub for activity—the diversity making Cho’s creation unique from previous, which typically were one distinct atmosphere. “This is more like a cinematic montage,” he says. There’s climbable netting in the Play Tower; a Tea House, referencing the adjacent Serpentine Gallery’s original use; and the Gallery, with an immersive sound installation by musician and fellow South Korean Jang Young-Gyu.

In fact, it’s the courtyards of hanoks, traditional Korean homes, and their function as a gathering place that inspired Archipelagic Void’s open-air core. “It’s an inversion of the usual configuration,” Cho explains—and his contribution to the shared spaces that are so essential to urban fabric.
