Maison&Objet’s Rising Talent Awards Highlight Nordic Design

2024 marks 30 years of the biannual trade fair Maison&Objet. At the September exhibition at Paris Nord Villepinte, all eyes are on up-and-coming designers from the Nordic countries. Emerging designers under 35-years-old and hailing from the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, plus Finland and Iceland were selected to show their work by an esteemed jury including Danish architect David Thulstrup and Franco-Swedish design team Färg & Blanche.

Why the Nordic focus? “Nordic countries are extremely dynamic and underpinned by a rich history, world-renowned talent, and considerable expertise. Northern Europe has a different relationship with time and natural materials, which are often left in their rawest state. The younger generation is asserting its new language of craft and collectible design.” says Dereen O’Sullivan, head of the Rising Talents Awards at Maison&Objet.

Here are the emerging designers taking part in the exposition, which wraps September 9:

Born in Outokumpu in eastern Finland, Antrei Hartikeinen studied woodworking, taking after his cabinetmaker father. The designer looks to nature for works like Mysena, a wooden sculpture in ash, oak, and elm, its charred base meant to emphasize the importance of soil for growth.

11 Top Moments from Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign 2024

Taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark from June 12-14, 2024, 3daysofdesign has grown exponentially since its start back in 2013. Now in its 11th year, the festival spread across the city—occupying showrooms, restaurants, former warehouses, and even a rococo palace—to showcase the work of over 350 exhibitors. This year’s theme was “Dare To Dream,” and focused on sustainability, human-centered design, and exploration.

Explore These Captivating Highlights From 3daysofdesign 2024

Framed by Garde Hvalsøe

As part of the ‘Crafted To Last’ exhibition curated by interior stylist Pernille Vest, Danish interior company Garde Hvalsøe presented a bespoke kitchen concept dubbed Framed in a version that juxtaposed birch wood and zinc cabinetry. The interplay of natural materials and craftsmanship provides a soothing environment for meal prep. gardehvalsoe.dk

Resonance Line by Marimekko

Finnish design house Marimekko previewed their Resonance line of hemp-based bags in Vireo, a refined textile developed by Hemp Bio under the Kvadrat Innovation Lab. Crafted of 70% hemp and coated with a bio-based polyurethane, the high-shine fabric was also shown upholstered on custom seating forms designed by local design firm Bunn Studio. The pieces may develop into furnishings for future Marimekko brand stores. But first, look for the bags at retail in September 2024 in three sizes in both the camel and charcoal colorways.

Monolit Upholstered Chair By Cecilie Manz x Fritz Hansen

Prolific Danish designer Cecilie Manz partnered with Fritz Hansen for her Monolit upholstered chair with an enveloping rounded shell back. Two heights offer options for lounging or dining, and both provide a comfortable seat within a small footprint. “I wanted it to be really reduced, drawn like a quick sketch, without too many details,” says Manz. “The challenging part is to get the two points, comfort and aesthetics, to meet.” The resulting designs meet the brief.

Atrostratus and Veil Tapestry Lighting By Ladies & Gentlemen Studio

Using fabrics produced by Kvadrat and sister-brand Sahco, the New York City-based Ladies & Gentlemen Studio showcased two lighting collections—Atrostratus and Veil Tapestry—in the interior spaces of the “Enter the Salon” collective exhibition curated by Signe Hytte. Dramatic, oversized, site-specific versions of Atrostratus filled the atrium of the top floor, a dreamy installation calling to mind cloud formations.

Young Hopes Campaign By Gubi

The Danish design brand Gubi harnessed the power of Pierre Paulin’s iconic Pacha chair for a partnership with UNICEF. The joint ‘Young Hopes’ campaign offers a limited edition of 100 chairs upholstered in surplus premium fabrics with all proceeds going to support health and education for children around the world. Bravo!

Fave Lounge Chair By Norr11

A wink to the 1980’s, Norr11’s Fave lounge chair blends a cool mirrored-chrome steel frame (also available in black powder-coat) connected to a wavy upholstered seat and cylindrical cushion back. Designed by Kristian Sofus Hansen and Tommy Hyldahl, ‘Fave’ is short for favorite, as it is sure to be a favored seat in any environment.

Sideways Collection By Rikke Frost For Carl Hansen & Søn

Industrial designer Rikke Frost’s collection for Carl Hansen—a Danish brand headquartered on the island of Funen—expands her existing Sideways collection to include an upholstered lounge chair with natural cord details and solid wood frame as well as a chameleon-like coffee table courtesy of its tabletop in reversible laminate and wood (there’s also a marble version for purists). Available in October 2024.

Striped Upholstered Chair By Mads Nørgaard x Montana

Fashion designer Mads Nørgaard is famous for stripes. His signature textile brings jaunty lines to Montana’s furnishings when the ruby and balsamic fabric upholsters seats on Kevi office chairs and constructs panels on their Montana Free shelving units, adding a bit of high-fashion flair.

Landskab Rugs By Cecilie Manz For Kasthall

Designer Cecilie Manz imagined her Landskab rug collection for the Kinna, Sweden-based manufacturer Kasthall as a soothing, long-lasting base layer. Consisting of four designs—Gryn and Korn are flatwovens while Spire and Ålegræs are hand-tufted—they come in dusty, muted colorways for aesthetic longevity and high durability. “Often, you don’t need a lot of color to be perceived as ’color.’ I like to work with colors in between,” said Manz.

‘A Thousand Moons’ By Salem Charabi

‘A Thousand Moons’ was a poetic installation of expertly crafted furniture by the Danish-Egyptian architect Salem Charabi. Developed over the course of two years in his workshop just outside Copenhagen, the 38-piece collection includes a chaise lounge perfect for repose and a large-scale, ochre-painted cabinet. All the pieces were built with one question in mind: How does one create a home?

‘Studies of a Bench’ by &Tradition

Installation ‘Studies of a Bench’ at &Tradition’s design house tapped five designers and design studios from as far afield as the United States, Mexico, South Korea, Italy, and Guatemala, as well locally positioned Denmark and nearby Sweden. The hybrid art-design exhibition explores materiality with works crafted from marble offcuts by Savvy Studio and compressed aluminum cans by Agnes Studio. The showcase also fosters community, bringing works by Jeongwha Seo, All the Way to Paris, and studioutte into the fold. Each bench will be sold at auction with proceeds donated to the charity each studio has selected.
