Glossy Reds Echo \u2018Suspiria\u2019 At This Bold Mexico City Bar<\/h1>\n\n\n

The glossy red ceiling gleams beneath shifting lights, its vibrant reflection dancing across the energy on the dance floor below. At Carmin, a former warehouse in Coyoac\u00e1n transformed into a hypnotic nightlife venue, bold colors and dynamic textures breathe life into the space. Zigzag mirrors distort perceptions, while Venetian tiles shimmer as the evening evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of the nearly 970-square-foot space is an imposing bar crowned by a striking crimson textile screen, cascading like the flowing red costumes featured in Suspiria <\/em>(2018). Luca Guadagnino\u2019s reimagining of Dario Argento\u2019s 1977 Italian horror classic\u2014featuring Tilda Swinton in three roles and Dakota Johnson as a dancer lured into a sinister Berlin academy\u2014inspired Mexican designer Maye Ruiz in crafting Carmin’s aura. For her, the film was more than a chromatic reference; it embodied an ethereal metamorphosis. \u201cThe way Suspiria <\/em>builds tension through color and movement resonated with me,\u201d says Ruiz, founder of MAYE Estudio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This cinematic influence also emerges in Carmin\u2019s layered textures. A custom-mixed green patina envelops the walls, contrasting the sleek ceiling. \u201cI love contrast,\u201d Ruiz says of the pairing, which balances age and fluidity. Scarlet, wine, and champagne Venetian mosaics meet green stucco, while glass tiles cloak the bar, honoring Italian and Mexican craftsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the evening unfolds at the bar, the energy evolves. \u201cAt the start of the night, it feels like a normal bar,\u201d the designer says. \u201cBy the end, everything is bathed in red\u2014it\u2019s dramatic, immersive, like the climax of the film,\u201d Ruiz explains, highlighting the impact of the lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirrors amplify the illusion, splitting and multiplying reflections in a transformation that goes beyond the visual. \u201cI love how it lets you step out of reality,\u201d Ruiz reflects on her design. \u201cEven shy people, like me, can become someone else for the night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
